STX Offshore & Shipbuilding unveiled two naval state-of-the-art patrol boats on September 23. The patrol boats were named in honor of Han Sang-guk and Cho Cheon-hyeong, two soldiers who died in a 2002 naval clash with North Korea. The debut of two high-speed guided-missile patrol boats are following the launch of the lead PKG (Patrol Killer Guided missile), the Yun Yeong Ha, named after a late lieutenant commander Yoon Young-ha who was also killed during a 2002 inter-Korean naval skirmish near the NLL.

STX Offshore & Shipbuilding held a launching ceremony for PKG-2 and PKG-3, the Han Sang Guk and the Jo Cheon Hyeong, with Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Jung Ok-keun, Chairman of STX Business Group Kang Duk-soo, Gyeongsangnam-do Provincial Governor Kim Tae-ho, staffs in STX Offshore & Shipbuilding, military officials and the bereaved families of Han and Jo in attendance.

The Han Sang Guk and the Jo Cheon Hyeong have more fighting strength for Anti-Surface Warfare, Anti-Air Warfare, Electric Warfare and Naval Surface Fire Support than the existing Patrol Killer Medium (PKM). In particular, the ships are equipped with long-range naval guns and automatic battle systems such as anti-ship guided missiles "Haesung" with a range of up to 140km, 76mm gun and 40mm gun with the fire rate of 600 rounds per minute. The two new high-speed patrol boats also have the cutting-edge technologies such as the three-dimensional radar system and the combat system, making it possible for Korean troops to perform pre-attack on detected enemies out of gunshot.

In addition, PKG-2 and 3 are equipped with a 27,000-horsepower water-jet propulsion system that was developed by Korea's own self-developed shipbuilding technology with the help of government investment. The ship with the system can sail through fishing nets in the low water depth. The installation of fire partition walls, the application of Stealth technology on the ship and the distributed control system improve the habitability of the crew and the survival capability of the ships.

The Han Sang Guk and the Jo Cheon Hyeong will be deployed September and October next year respectively after a trial voyage for one year. The launch of PKGs makes STX Offshore & Shipbuilding a specialized shipbuilding complex that can produce naval vessels, passenger ships, special ships and merchant ships.
