- Highly recognized for contributing to national low-carbon, green growth policy STX Offshore & Shipbuilding (President: Kim Kang-soo, www.stxons.com) got credit for contributing to national low-carbon, green growth policy by reducing industrial waste and recycling, winning the glory to receive the Presidential Commendation in the 2009 Recycling Leading Enterprise Awards. STX Offshore & Shipbuilding announced that it was honored with President's commendation during a ceremony in Seonyudo Park on September 5. The ceremony was attended by executives and staff members from other 16 honorees including Samsung Electronics, Samsung Heavy Industries and Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering and citizens. The Award hosted by the Ministry of Environment and Korea Environment & Resources Corporation is given to companies which make contributions to low-carbon, green growth policy by curbing industrial waste and boosting recycling. STX Offshore & Shipbuilding have received ISO 14001 certification (the standard for Environmental Management Systems) to make the work places eco-friendly and pollution-free. It also has developed waste management systems within Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) computing systems to monitor waste amount and processing costs on a real time basis. Additionally, it evaluates separate waste collection of each team for waste reduction and gives best teams rewards quarterly. It also runs a collection-recycling system to recycle illegally scrapped equipment. Besides, the company has introduced a program for automatically measuring painting area, leading to a decrease in the amount of discarded paint with the accuracy of painting area. When painting, it uses Wet Gauge (a tool gauging the painting area) to minimize the use of paint by reducing variation in paint film thickness. Through these ongoing activities for waste reduction, STX Offshore & Shipbuilding reduced the amount of waste in 2008 by 22 percent compared to 2007, saving about 210 million won. Vice president Shin Sung-soo of the company attended the ceremony and said, ¡°It is very honorable to receive President's Commendation in the Recycling Leading Enterprise Awards. The award is given to companies that put environment as a top priority.¡± ¡°We continue to make efforts to reduce waste. In addition, we will spread these activities to our subsidiaries and partners and become the foundation for Korea's green growth,¡± he added.
